Maria Michael is a screenwriter and director, originally from Cyprus, based in Athens. She holds an MA in Film and TV Directing from Met Film School London, where she trained at Ealing Studios, a BA in Acting from the Athens Conservatoire Drama School, and a BA in Political Science from the University of Cyprus.
With a strong interest in evoking emotions, Maria creates stylised dystopian worlds that explore themes of female empowerment, gender issues, social imbalances and existential and self-awareness, with a dark sense of humour.
Her short film, The Pulse Within Us, has received international recognition at various film festivals, including the Topaz Film Festival in Texas, the Toronto International Women Film Festival and the Montreal Independent Film Festival. In 2021, Maria was awarded Best New Film Director at the Athens Marathon Film Festival. Since 2022, The Pulse Within Us, has been distributed on Amazon Prime in the USA and the UK.
Catwalk, Maria’s latest short film, premiered at the North East International Film Festival in Newcastle and has been screened at several international film festivals.
Η Μαρία Μιχαήλ είναι σεναριογράφος και σκηνοθέτις, με καταγωγή από την Κύπρο και έδρα την Αθήνα. Έχει ολοκληρώσει μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στη Σκηνοθεσία Κινηματογράφου στο Met Film School του Λονδίνου, όπου εκπαιδεύτηκε στα Ealing Studios, στην Υποκριτική στη Δραματική Σχολή του Ωδείου Αθηνών, καθώς και πτυχίο Πολιτικών Επιστημών από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου.
Η Μαρία δημιουργεί στιλιζαρισμένους δυστοπικούς κόσμους, που εξερευνούν θέματα γυναικείας ενδυνάμωσης, έμφυλων ζητημάτων, κοινωνικών ανισοτήτων και υπαρξιακής αναζήτησης, πάντα με μια αίσθηση μαύρου χιούμορ.
Η μικρού μήκους ταινία της, The Pulse Within Us, έχει λάβει διεθνή αναγνώριση από διάφορα διεθνή φεστιβάλ κινηματογράφου, όπως το Topaz Film Festival στο Τέξας, το Toronto International Women Film Festival και το Montreal Independent Film Festival. Το 2021, η Μαρία βραβεύτηκε ως «Καλύτερη Νέα Σκηνοθέτις» στο Athens Marathon Film Festival. Η ταινία “The Pulse Within Us” διανέμεται στο Amazon Prime στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο.
Η πιο πρόσφατη μικρού μήκους ταινία της, “Catwalk”, έκανε την πρεμιέρα της στο North East International Film Festival και έχει προβληθεί σε διάφορα διεθνή φεστιβάλ κινηματογράφου, όπως το Mansfield Town Film Festival, το Fashion Film Festival στο Σικάγου και στο TiSFF - Thess International Shorts.
